Yes, We begin by emptying the cartridge through vacuum, followed by the addition of a cleaning agent, then vacuuming until the agent is removed. We are not, however achieving the lower weight that Yianni is realizing. He has sent me a separate email showing how he has found that the HP carts do weigh different amounts when empty. This could explain the variance in reported empty weight of the 6578 for example. Yianni has prepared an excellent study which seems to indicate that HP may be using an ink of a different density - or possibly filling the cart with a few extra ml's. What ever the case may be, I think that replacement sponge material will be necessary for the proper recycling of this cart.

I normally pull a vacuum of 24" for about 3 seconds on the vacuum chamber, before injecting my ink into the cartridge. I have tried several inks using Cabott dispersions and they seem to work well. Doing so I have been able to average a total refill weight of 51 grams for the HP 56. I do not have enough data yet to give a good refill weight for the HP 57. I am testing some replacement foam and if it works will report the source.
