Okay I've been told elsewhere (about cleaning VCR heads, floppy drives, etc) NOT to use isopropyl alcohol, because it contains lanolin (for rubbing alcohol purposes?) I can't see anything on the labels that says this, and seems like it would have to say, because some people are allergic to lanolin. I was told to get something like 90% pure alcohol to clean things with. I never remembered to do this. I've always used regular cheap alcohol to clean things like this with. I had wondered about cleaning the contacts in the printer. If the ink was leaking from the cartridge it might get in there. Thanks for the help. Just starting out with something can be confusing. The NEW and OLD settings are just for the ink counter. Which is why my color ink now says it's full, even though it's not working. My old printer was so much easier, I just put a cartridge in (either black or color, not both) and it printed what I told it. And when it ran out of ink it stopped showing (LOL) ~ Carrie When you tell the printer the cartridge is "new" you are > telling the printer to reset tie ink counter, if you leave > it as "OLD" the Lexmark ink counter will be constantly > nagging you to put in a new (full) cartridge. > > The errors can sometimes be attributed to a defective > cartridge. > > Clean the electrical contacts, use isopropyl alcohol & a lint free cloth. Wipe the copper foil from the top down to the printhead. If you go the other way, you can drag ink from the printhead area to the electrical contacts. > In the carriage where the cartridge contacts mate, area another set of contacts. Those can also need cleaning. Top to bottom. > > If the printer still gives errors, either the printer or > the cartridge is faulty. > > John |
